I've been designing books on a freelance basis for National Geographic Books for over twenty years.
Three spread introduction featuring a timeline of the entire Civil War along the bottom
Every chapter featured a timeline of the events of the war covered in that chapter.
Each spread featured a map surrounded by photos of the event. Photos and maps are plotted with numbers that relate each location to the story in the main text.
Orders of Battle sidebars were included for important battles.

This book featured self-contained map spreads with photos illustrating the people and events related to the map. The map was plotted with numbered bullets to tie the locations of the photos and events mentioned in the text to point on the map.
George Washington's famous letters to his wife during the Revolutionary War are featured throughout as sidebars.
Biography section opener. Each chapter concluded with a biography of one of the Founding Fathers.

The National Geographic Kids Book Division designs all their covers in-house, but I have been hired to design interiors. Lots of energy, lots of color, lots of fonts, lots of image research…and lots of fun!
Facts about the Bible grouped by subject matter in spreads of 15, 25, 50, and 75.
The challenge of this book was explaining scientific concepts in short, fun blocks that would appeal to kids. It was divided into two sections: Life Sciences and Physical Sciences. This was the opener for the Physical Science section.
An Encyclopedia featuring two spreads for every state in the U.S. full of quick-hit facts.
The upfront section featured specific topic spreads about the entire U.S.

Designed this cover for a biography of Confederate general, John Bell Hood, written by his distant ancestor and published by Savas Beatie. I was able to find the a rare image of Hood before his leg was amputated, much to the delight of the author.
Designed the yearly fundraising calendar for this Decatur preschool for 5 years, featuring artwork by every child in the school.
Each month of the calendar featured a class at the preschool, with drawings by every child in the class surrounding their photo. The titles of the drawings came from the children themselves. This was my class!

I worked with a metal artist to turn the wreath logo I drew for Kelly Hobbs' wedding invitation into a frame for the sign outside Kelly's Closet, her bridal salon in Candler Park.
Wedding invitation for musician Shawn Mullins and Kelly Hobbs. Kelly loved the embossed wreath illustration I created so much that we used it to create the sign in front of her bridal store, Kelly's Closet.
We used the lace from the bride's gown printed on vellum and tied each booklet together with green ribbon.
